Safe Rx Taps “The Pharmacist” as Mission Advisor

Docuseries pharmacist Dan Schneider and Safe Rx team up on efforts to raise awareness of prescription drug abuse and its role in the opioid crisis

GREENWOOD VILLIAGE, Colo., Nov. 9, 2020 – Safe Rx, a company on a mission to fight America’s opioid epidemic and drug abuse with its award-winning Locking Pill Bottle (LPB®), today announced that Dan Schneider has joined its team as an advisor on its mission, consulting on the company’s efforts to prevent prescription drug abuse in the home through parent education and safe storage strategies. Dan Schneider’s personal experience with the opioid crisis and prescription drug abuse in Louisiana was featured this year in the Netflix hit docuseries, “The Pharmacist.”

Schneider lost his son in 1999 when he was killed in a drug deal gone wrong. Frustrated by the ensuing investigation, he took it upon himself to bring his son’s killer to justice. During this process, he uncovered the layers of the opioid crisis in the U.S. and has since made it his mission to raise awareness of the problem and educate parents on how they can prevent a similar tragedy through his foundation, Tunnel of Hope.

“I look forward to working with Safe Rx to raise awareness of the opioid epidemic and the role of prescription medication abuse,” said Dan Schneider of the Netflix docuseries, “The Pharmacist”. “We share a mutual goal of educating parents across the U.S. on the importance of securing medicine at home and protecting family members from drug misuse.”

According to the Partnership for Drug-Free Kids, more than half of parents say anyone can access their medicine cabinet, 73% of teens say it’s easy to access prescription drugs from the family medicine cabinet, and 38% percent of teens who have misused or abused a prescription drug have obtained it from the home medicine cabinet.

Recognizing the role the medicine cabinet can play in the early stages of prescription drug abuse, Safe Rx created a solution – locking pill bottles. The Safe Locking Pill Bottle (LPB®), is a patented, physician-developed, child-resistant and senior-friendly certified safe storage solution with a combination lock, providing an additional layer of security in preventing drug pilfering from the family medicine cabinet. In the past few years, Safe Rx has gained distribution via multiple national retailers such as Target, in regional grocery store chains, and on Amazon.

“We’re thrilled to bring Dan on board as a mission advisor,” said Milton Cohen, president and CEO of Safe Rx. “His heartbreaking yet inspiring personal experience with and commitment to raising awareness of the opioid crisis will be invaluable to us as we seek to fight this epidemic and prescription drug abuse with our locking pill bottles.”
